Most of Sri Lanka’s tea plantations are located in the central highlands, particularly in regions like Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, and Ella. These areas offer stunning landscapes with lush green hills covered in tea bushes. Visitors can join guided tours of tea plantations and factories, which are usually conducted by experienced guides who explain the history of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka and the entire tea making process.
You might have the opportunity to try your hand at tea plucking, where you’ll learn how to pick the tea leaves from the bushes. During your tour, you’ll get to visit a tea factory where you can observe the various steps involved in tea production. These steps typically include withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, and sorting. A highlight of the visit is the tea tasting session. You’ll have the opportunity to sample different types of teas produced at the factory, including black, green, and white teas. Sri Lanka is particularly famous for its Ceylon black tea, which comes in various grades and flavors.
