The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a well known and popular tourist attraction located in Pinnawala, Sri Lanka. Established in 1975, it is one of the largest and most recognized elephant orphanages in the world. The primary mission of the orphanage is to care for and rehabilitate orphaned, injured, or abandoned elephants, with a strong focus on their conservation and well being.
The orphanage is home to a significant number of elephants, including both adults and baby elephants. Visitors can observe the elephants at close range and watch them being bathed in the nearby river, which is a daily highlight. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage plays a vital role in rehabilitating elephants so that they can eventually be reintroduced into the wild when possible. While some elephants are unable to return to the wild due to injuries or other factors, the orphanage provides a safe and nurturing environment for their lifetime care.
